Reports indicate a key witness in the ongoing case involving the arrest of Hinds County District Attorney Robert Shuler Smith is missing, or being held by law enforcement in an undisclosed location.
The Clarion Ledger reports that as the saga continues to unfold, an important character in the case remains M.I.A.
That’s because law enforcement officers have concealed the whereabouts of Christopher Butler, the criminal defendant Smith is accused of aiding.
“It can’t be for his safety because the people that in jail are no threat to him,” said Butler’s mother, Edia Butler. “It’s the people that are out of jail — law enforcement.”
Last week, Smith and Assistant District Attorney Jamie McBride were indicted on felony charges alleging the two worked with Ivon Johnson, a former assistant district attorney who pleaded guilty to conspiracy in July, and others to hinder Butler’s prosecution.
Butler faces several charges including marijuana possession and mail fraud.
Butler does not appear in jail records in Hinds, Rankin or Madison.
