Sen. Rita Potts Parks (R-Alcorn, Tishomingo, Tippah) said designating possible lottery funds is a bad idea.

“It’s tough to plan any budget when funds are designated, because we are always unaware of how much money is coming,” said Parks.

She added, “If a lottery does happen, I think the funds should go into the General Fund instead of being designated. Then we could create line-items for MDOT in the budget for road maintenance, bridge repair and new construction. This would minimize the amount of money that would be wasted by the department.”

Parks said although she’s open to creating new ways to generate income in the state, the Kossuth native is against a state lottery. Rep. Nick Bain (D-Corinth) said he will also vote no on any lottery legislation.

“I don’t feel like my constituents would want me to vote for it,” said Parks. “But regardless, I’m against designating funds.”
