For legislators who actively worked to get the Mississippi Medicaid Fraud Prevention Act to the governors desk earlier this year, the news of Pickering’s project was a complete surprise. Leave it to Republican Legislators to finally pass a new law to introduce some efficiency standards that might “reduce the size and scope of government,” only to have another Republican officeholder inject an additional layer of complexity before it even gets moving.

For health care to go through the current route: falling ever-further behind the market-driven direction of history, riddled with bureaucracy and undergoing unending pressure toward the disaster of single payer. This is an intolerable result.

The failure traces to a lack of understanding and imagination at the top. There is no other choice: the repeal and replace must be done at the lower levels of society, by people with an intellectual comprehension of the stakes and the real solution.

The only real option to correcting this mess is getting government out of it. That’s obviously not going to happen with the current crop of geniuses scurrying around under the Capitol Dome in DC. Removing government from the equation isn’t really a high priority for lawmakers in Mississippi either, no matter what they tell you. This includes the spineless Republicans who are more adept at spouting talking points on the campaign trail than they are finding ways to put those points into action that accomplishes the goal.

Government becomes involved in certain areas of our lives; the problems then become worse, so the government has to devise another solution to fix the problem that it created in the first place. It results in a neverending cycle of government intervention.

Senator Roger Wicker recently released a statement defending the Omnibus Budget Bill as a positive accomplishment. “Without this bill,” he wrote, “we would be continuing the spending priorities of the Obama era.” The bill “demonstrates how Republicans are committed to making the tough choices that need to be made to control federal spending. Any good, service, or industry that is removed from market control and put into the hands of government thereby becomes subjected to the grueling and ghastly machinations of the political process in all its subterfuge, duplicity, and vast waste.

Even if you don’t like every result of market control, it’s hard to imagine that anyone can defend what necessarily replaces it once you surrender any market to control by government.

In addition to federal law, every state regulates the sale of insurance. That’s one of the roadblocks to interstate sale of insurance and one of the drivers of premium costs. So even with repeal of federal law, insurance will remain intensely regulated.
