Port of Gulfport Must Add 800 Additional Jobs To Qualify For $570 Million Of Federal Money

In exchange for the HUD money, the Mississippi Development Authority agreed that the port would create 1,300 jobs, 51 percent of which are to be targeted for low to middle income individuals.

As mayor, Hewes has overseen a continued revitalization effort of the Gulfport downtown area and Jones Park. Adjacent to downtown and the nearby Port of Gulfport, which received nearly $600 million in federal aid following Hurricane Katrina, Jones Park is frequently the site of music festivals and events and is to become more accessible to visitors by a bridge over U.S. 90 linking the park to downtown.
